This maneuver was perfected by SOG teams in Vietnam. It's really pretty simple and in US terrain, might even be more effective than in Nam.
When in heavy contact, simply begin backing up, firing at any exposed enemy. As you back up though, also move ever so slightly to the right or left as well, then duck behind cover/concealment, work your way along it laterally, then once the enemy has lost sight of you, begin moving forward again, catching them in the flank, or even the rear. Think of it as an upside down question mark.
It's especially effective against aggressive teams as they will pursue toward the last place they saw you. Sometimes, you can completely come around and nail them from behind. Other times, it's a convenient way to escape a superior sized force (as was the case in Nam).

i find that harder then run all the way left or right using cover for protection
