i talk to some young guys that think point is the first to be "fodder" for the other team and dont consider it an oppertunity to engage the opposition first? what gives?

Not sure what gives with that. maybe they have no skills so their teammates use them for fodder out front but from my experiences in RL and in airsoft a good point man is worth his weight in gold.
A good point man will all but know when they are walking into an ambush, or some other kind of enemy force. He will know and be able to decide if his group is capable of killing all of the enemy, if they need to retreat and try another angle, or get reinforcements.
So in my not so humble opinion if you think being pointman is merely being the first into the bb grinder then you need to really look at your tactics and methods of combat and find someone that is willing to teach you and learn all you can. ---------- ________________ A Jarhead once said "You can run, but you will only die tired" __________________________________________

my main tactic it to rush the enemy like hell. stay protected behind stuff but rush like hell. cut off main access points and set up ambushes with like 3-4 people. never go anywhere alone always take a partner when you need to go somewhere. when you need to reload get someone to gaurd you and vice versa.

in my opinion to be a point man you also need point man experience. you can't send a noob to be a point man, cuz they will screw up and get everyone "killed". the only reason i send a noob as point man is to get intel on where the enemy is shooting and if it an ambush or not. (decoy)

Because the games I usually play in are small and casual, other players aren't always well equipped or experienced. Therefore, when we break into teams, I'm usually the default point man. I've found that as long as you stay alert and think strategically, it's possible to keep yourself and your entire squad alive. Of course, this is true of every position on a team.
If you "die" repeatedly as point man, it's probably not due to the fact that you're physically in front of everyone else. Change your tactics up--be exaggeratedly cautious and your squad will take the hint. Also, communication is key. Develop some hand signals with your teammates so you can give orders and alert them to enemy locations silently. Don't forget to discuss a plan of action before beginning the game. That way, you won't need to give as many orders in the field (reducing your chances of being detected), and if you get hit, your team can still maintain order.
