Gun/LiPo Problem

I recently upgraded my M4 with a LiPo ready gearbox and motor, thus I got a LiPo battery. After Charging it fully with a smart charger I decided to have some fun. I shot through a mag when I noticed the connector started to smoke and decided to fuse the male and female connectors together. I managed to get them separated but both are burnt out. My question is how exactly do I repair them? I know I have to replace both the male and female parts but do I need to replace the wires? And can I just cut the wire and replace it with a identical piece?

Much appreciated.

If the wire is not damaged other than the connectors you could just snip off the connectors and replace them with new ones. However, if that type of connector cannot handle the ammount of power running through them you may want to switch to a different kind of connector. I use the DEANS connectors, but I also know armsdealer does not care for that kind.

I have not seen connectors do that, what is the discharge rate on your battery?

From what I remember, Armsdealer told me the main reason to switch to Deans is because they are technically "rated" to be used with LiPos. If you're having problems with your connectors and LiPos, I think it's probably time to switch to Deans or higher quality Tamiyas then the ones you are using now.

I don't see why they shouldn't be able to handle the power considering it is LiPo ready.

I find it amazing that you completely melted a connector. Hahaha

LiPo ready means absolutely nothing. This is one of the many truths that has made itself known to me throughout this summer.

The biggest question here: What is your discharge rate, and other battery specs?

Adam, your gearbox may be completely and totally LiPo ready, but your connectors are not, as has been shown. Also, there's plenty of ways to spin "LiPo-Ready". As I'm sure you know, there are different voltage ratings of LiPos just as there are of NiMh and NiCad. One could say their gearbox is LiPo Ready, but that could be only with a 7.2v LiPo rather than an 11.1v which I'm guessing you are using.

Good point....I'll get my lawyer XD

But how would I go about fixing this? With those fancy Deans connectors and such.

* Voltage is the electrical pressure in a circuit
* Amperes (amps),or in your case mil.amps, are the measure of electrical current in a circuit
* Ohms are the measurements of resistance in a circuit
* Current is essentially how fast electrons are moving in a circuit
* Resistance is what impedes the electrical current, and can be found in the wire or various loads in a circuit.
I suggest you use the largest connectors (the ones with the most metallic surface area) that you can find. Smaller metallic surface area offers greater resistance to current (amperage) flow.
Think of current as water. How much can flow through a soda straw compared to a water hose. The hose and straw diameter equates to resistance. The greater the resistance,
the harder it is to pump a given volume of water or electrically speaking the voltage of the battery, though the connector.

Actually Paladin is onto something too, what type of wiring are you using? If the wiring is, say, 16awg wiring it may be creating too much resistance. If you can read what type of wiring you have on your gun right now, it should be 14awg or lower. Also, for the Deans, all you have to do is snip off the wiring that goes to the connectors (one wire at a time, not both at a time or you will be electrocuted), strip a little bit of the wiring off at each end, then solder the new Deans connectors on where the old ones where and heat-shrink to cover the old wiring.

The wiring on the gun does not say and the battery has a 16awg. And I'll probably need both male and female Deans right? Oh and a lot of help with this lol. I have no idea what I'm doing.

Adam, here is a video on how to attach the Deans connectors. Also, you will probably want to make up/have someone make up a Deans to Tamiya adaptor so you can charge the battery on a Tamiya charger if you don't want to put Deans on the charger.

Should be fine as far as the charger/balancer goes, should be a separate plug.

So the gun is lipo-ready according to whom?

Just because the gun is Lipo ready does not mean it would work properly with your chosen Lipo. My biggest problem with retailer advertising guns as Lipo Ready is they don't specify which battery it will work with.

You still have the same rules as with other batteries - too much voltage can still melt your wiring and motor or preamturely wear down your gears.

Not all Lipos are created equally.

Well the gearbox was from evike as well as the motor and battery. I bought a smart charger for it so everything would be fine. I'm fairly certain that the wires were the problem.
