Troy (the armored car driver at Freefall) and I will be hosting a free WWII skirmish at his field west of Neillsville on Saturday, October 13. This will be a reenactor-style event, so at least 75% authentic uniform/gear is required, as well as period-correct weaponry (Thompsons, grease guns, Stens, MP40s, M1 Garands or carbines, M1911 Colts, K98s, Broomhandle Mausers, Mosin-Nagants, PPSh41s, etc.) Players not mustering with a squad will be assigned to one.

For those of you who have a WWII-style gun but no uniform to go with it, we will be allowing partisan and volksturm units - '40s-style civilian attire is pretty cheap and easy at the thrift store: baggie wool dress slacks (bonus points for pinstripes,) suspenders, vests, three- or four-button wool or cotton sports jackets with narrow lapels(single or double-breasted), leather bomber jackets, trenchcoats, wide leather belts, leather shoes or boots, cotton dress shirts with or without collars, neckerchiefs, white tank-top undershirts or three-button union shirts, and a hat (floppy wool berets, Greek fisherman's caps, tweed cabbie's caps, snap-brim felt hats.) Think "Casablanca." And hit the library....

Anyway, let me know if you want to join us - we're trying to get a headcount.

Hmm... I have an american GI outfit that is pretty accurate, so I might be able to attend. I have the second half of Op Plague on the 14th, so I don't know if I will be able to... but I'll try! :)

Patton Unleashed!

It's late 1945 and the Russians have refused a US ultimatum to vacate Eastern Europe. Allied high command has enlisted the aid of surviving SS units and has unleashed Gen. George Patton in an eastward drive towards the Russian border. Opposing them are entrenched elements of the Red Army and their Polish Resistance allies.

Yes, you got it, U.S. & German vs. Russia & Friends at ISG’s Neillsville airsoft field! If you do Red Army or partisan, we especially need you. If this will be your first WWII reenactor-style event, Polish Resistance or German Volksturm is the way to go - all you need is a tweed cabbie hat or beret or fedora, an old wool jacket and some baggie cuffed "old man" pants!

The campsite will be open for setup on Friday 12 October, with game on at 9am Saturday 13 October. This will be a Level Green skirmish event - at least 75% correct uniform or WWII-era civilian garb for Resistance requested, with some flexibility regarding weaponry (within reason.) This will be a free event, with a donation box at the Registration Area.

Field Location: N2955 Sidney Ave., Neillsville, WI 54456

Elements of the 2nd Rangers and the 9th SS have confirmed already, and the 198th will field as many as we can muster.

If you can make it, let us know so we can post an order of battle. If you can't make it, no need to complain, we plan to host more events.

Shoot, my pics didn't come up here. Oh, well. To see the field map and pics, check out our post on the WW2AA forum at:

I've gotten some questions about the gun and garb requirements for this skirmish. Just to be clear, this will be a WW2AA level Green event, which means a player must be dressed 75% authentic (this usually means authentic headgear, tunic/shirt, jacket; with pants the right color but maybe the wrong cut, and inaccurate but unobtrusive footwear.) This also means, however, that non-WWII guns are allowed. For guys playing Partisans or volksturm, pump shotguns would be fine if you remove the sight rail, or just about any springer or gas pistol. Bolt action rifles are perfect. AEGs like the MP5 or M14 would be fine as well. The M14 in particular looks a lot like a Russian Tokarev SVT-40.

Here's the thing: many WWII airsofters have expensive conversion-built bolt action springers that look almost EXACTLY like real-steel K98s, Mosin-Nagants, etc, and it pisses them off no end to be outgunned by a guy with a non-period weapon. Much of the point of reenactment-style is to get a feel for the combat of the period.

We have 16 players in full uniform lined up so far. We'd like more Germans. I would be happy to help any of the ABZ regulars garb up for this event if they want to come as volksturm (German citizen militia.)

The WW2AA guys are pretty pumped! Looks like we'll be pulling at least 20 to 30 of them, some from as far away as Indiana. Plus a Russian armored car, and a war-era Jeep. If you're at all curious about doing WWII-era airsoft, this would be a good place to check it out.

We will run three two-hour battles, as described below. There's still plenty of room for civilian irregulars - I have enough '40s-style garb to outfit a couple of players who fit into size 38 jackets and large hats. Let me know if you're interested....

Field Location: N2955 Sidney Ave., Neillsville, WI 54456

Our October 12-13 Skirmish schedule will be as follows:

The field is open for camp set-up and recon after 10am Friday morning. Please, NO FIRING anywhere on the field on Friday without the knowledge and express permission of Troy the field operator - we do NOT want any "stray BB" incidents.

The registration and chronograph area will be open at 8am Saturday morning.

Safety Briefing begins at 8:30am.

We will be running three two-hour-long scenarios, "Patton Unleashed," "Suburbs of Berlin," and "Link-Up," with a rest break at 11:00am, and a lunchbreak at 1:30pm.

First Skirmish 9:00am - “Patton Unleashed.” This scenario will pit all available Russian and their drafted civilian irregular members against the German and U.S. contingents. The start point for the U.S. and German attack force will be the stand in the southwest portion of the playing field by the creek. Russian defenders may start anywhere in the northwest quadrant on the map north of the center fenceline and west of the village. The goal of Patton’s troops is to secure the village and sweep all Russian defenders into the northeast quadrant of the field. Each side will be allowed to regenerate troops at a set rate. The US and German regeneration rate is set at two per soldier. In other words, a US player can regenerate twice, but the third time he is eliminated, he is out of the battle. The Russian and irregular regeneration rate is set at three. That gives each Russian four lives. Each side will have designated regeneration points. For the U.S./German side, the regen point will be the stand in the southwest corner. The Russian regen point will be the machinegun nest in the northeastern corner. Once at your regen point, you can regenerate with other casualties. U.S. and German regens may reinsert into battle once there are four or more eliminated players who can reinsert as a reinforcement squad. Russian regens reenter the battle when there are two or more eliminated players who can reinsert as a combat pair. The battle will last for two hours, or until Patton’s troops capture the town AND eliminate all Russian or guerrilla elements to the west of the village. The battle will begin with two medium whistle blasts and end with two longer whistle blasts. The Russian forces begin the scenario with an armored car. Patton’s forces will have a Jeep, and at least one bazooka or Panzerfaust that can disable the armored car.

11:00am-11:30am – Rest and Reload.

Second Skirmish 11:30am – “Suburbs of Berlin.” In the second engagement, the Germans will defend a small farming village on the outskirts of Berlin. German regulars and Volkssturmen start in the village area. Each German player will have one regen for this battle. Germans regen by removing themselves to any building, steel drum, emplacement, or delelict prop vehicle on the field that is a safe distance from the action (say 50 yards or so) and then reentering the action once they have respawned. They can do this individually - a German reinforcement does not have to wait to form a squad before reinserting. An eliminated German must stay out of the battle for a period of five minutes. Players without watches should count to 300 before reinserting. U.S. and Russian troops will be attacking. US troops start at downed aircraft and that is their regen point. Each US troop will have one regen (two lives) and will be allowed to reenter from the regen point in squads of four. The Russians will begin and respawn at the machinegun nest, each will have two regens (three lives) for this battle, and will be allowed to reinsert from the regen point in combat teams of two or more. The Russians will once again start with the armored car, the US will have the Jeep, and the Germans will have one or two Panzerfausts. The scenario ends after two hours, or when all Germans are out of the battle. This means that, even if the town falls, the battle does not end until every single German has lost both of their two lives. For example, the Germans could counterattack the town as long as they still have forces, or perhaps go into hiding and need to be mopped up. Once again, the battle will start with two medium whistle blasts and end with two longer whistle blasts.

1:30pm-2:30pm - Lunchbreak

Third Skirmish 2:30pm - “Link-Up.” US forces start and regen at the stand in the southwest corner, while the Russians start and regen at their trusty machinegun nest on the far east side of the field. Once all Allied troops are in place, the Germans and Volkssturmen can secretly start wherever they want to on the field. For this scenario, the armored car starts as a German capture, while the Russians have a Lend-Lease Jeep and the US has at least one bazooka. The US and Russian forces in this sector are tasked with linking up before they can advance on Berlin. The Germans and local Volkssturmen have orders to harrass them and stall the link-up for as long as possible. To link up, all surviving Russians must make it alive to the US-held firebase at the southwest stand. US troops have 2 regens each and must reinsert in squads of four or more; Russians each have 3 reinserts and must reinsert in combat teams of two or more; Germans and Volkssturmen can respawn individually in the armored car or inside any building on the field after five minutes, and each has 2 regens. The scenario ends at 4:30pm, or when all the Germans are out of the battle, OR when all of the Russians are out of the battle, OR when all surviving Russians reach the US firebase to complete the link-up. Once again, the battle will start with two medium whistle blasts and end with two longer whistle blasts.

4:30pm – Skirmish over. Any remaining personal gear and camping equipment must be removed from the field at this time. Weather and daylight permitting, informal skirmishing will be allowed after all players have cleared their gear from the field.

Elements of the 2nd Rangers and the 9th SS have confirmed already, and the 198th will field as many as we can muster. If you can make it, PM me so I can add you to the roster. If you can't make it, no need to complain, we plan to host more events.

The Rules:
WWII AIRSOFT SKIRMISH SAFETY & CONDUCT RULES

1. GOGGLES AND HEADGEAR MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES ON THE FIELD AND TARGET RANGE. At no time during the game will players be allowed to lift or remove their goggles from around their eyes. Only goggles / eyewear that meet the following requirements will be allowed:
• The impact standard for goggles is ANSI z.87.1.
• They must fully encompass the eyes, with no gaps.
• They must be fitted with a head strap to keep them from falling off during a game.
• The lens or mesh frame must be sturdy enough to keep the lens in place during play.
In addition, all players are required to wear some form of period hat, cap, helmet, or other heargear while actively in play. Headgear is only to be removed during gameplay to indicate elimination. It is also highly recommended (but not required) that a player’s ears, nose and mouth must be covered / blocked with something preventing penetration of BBs, such as a paintball mask, balaclava, bandana, shemagh etc.

2. BARREL BLOCKING DEVICES ARE REQUIRED OFF-FIELD. Barrel blocking devices such as the red barrel caps that come with most AEGs, paintball approved barrel socks/condoms, or holsters for sidearms are required to be secured over player’s gun barrels at all times. The only exception is at the target range or on a playing field after the game starts.

3. ALL GUNS MUST BE MAGAZINE FREE OFF-FIELD. All handheld or slung guns must be loading magazine free (“Mag Free”) in the staging and parking lot areas. Sidearms are not required to be mag free as long as they are holstered. Once eliminated from play, a player must remove the magazine from his gun, fire 2-3 clearing shots in a safe direction, and cap his gun barrel with his barrel blocking device before proceeding to his team’s reinsertion area.

4. ALL GUNS MUST BE SAFELY TRANSPORTED. All guests must transport their guns in a safe manner. Specifically, all guns must be carried in a soft or hard shell case suitable for real firearms until you are in the staging area. All guns must have a factory-installed trigger guard.

5. FPS LIMITS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. All guns must be chronographed prior to game time. Players may also be chosen at random for handheld chronograph spot-checks.
FPS Limits are:
AEGs & GBBs: 400 FPS w/ .20 gram BBs.
Single-Shot or Bolt-Action Rifles: 500 FPS with .20 gram BBs.
All guns will be chronographed prior to the beginning of the game using .20 gram BBs. You will be given 2 attempts, consisting of no more than 3 shots each, in which to chronograph at the appropriate FPS. If your gun is unable to chronograph legal after 2 attempts, you will not be able to use that weapon in the game. Once your gun passes the chronograph test, it will have a colored piece of yarn attached to it classifying it as either a Standard or a Rifle class weapon. No weapons without yarn tie will be allowed on the field of play. All guns are subject to a chronograph test at any time deemed necessary by the event organizer. Any modifications made to your gun after being chronographed found to increase your FPS will result in your immediate and permanent removal from the game.

6. PLASTIC BBs ONLY. Biodegradable or metal BBs are not allowed. Plastic BBs will be available for purchase in the staging area before and during the game. Once your gun has been chronographed, you may choose to fire a heavier BB during the game; however, 6mm or 8mm BBs heavier than .35 grams are not allowed.

7. SHOOTING SAFETY. Players may only discharge their weapons at the target range or on the playing field. No shooting into or out of the staging area, parking lot, or reinsertion waiting areas. NO BLIND SHOOTING - players must be able to see their target. Weapons firing at 400 fps or less have a minimum engagement distance of 15 feet. Rifles shooting over 400 fps have a minimum engagement distance of 30 feet. If an opponent is closer than a weapon’s minimum engagement distance, a player should shout "BANG" in order to notify the opponent he/she has been eliminated at extreme close range. You must have an open line of sight to perform a “bang” kill - a "bang" kill may not be performed through a barrier or through netting. While head shots count, players are asked not to intentionally target another player’s head, especially if their face is unprotected.

8. TRENCHES, MINEFIELDS & FOXHOLES. Players should avoid all field hazards such as fences, ruts, and vines. Guests should report any hazard to the field operator. Players may construct foxholes, minefields, and/or defensive sandbag works IN DESIGNATED AREAS ONLY. Players are not allowed to construct any sort of booby traps, roadblocks, barricades or bunkers in any roadway or outside of the designated areas. Players may not alter man-made features in the playing area without the field operator’s permission. Players may never climb trees or tree stands, enter or exit a structure through a window, or climb onto or under any prop vehicles.

9. NO UNAUTHORIZED EQUIPMENT. Players are not allowed to bring onto the playing field any equipment deemed unsafe or non-period by the Event Organizer. If you are uncertain regarding a particular item, show it to the Event Organizer BEFORE bringing it onto the field. Players on the field are allowed to carry bayonets as part of their impression, provided that each bayonet is “peace-bound” (i.e., securely tied down) in its scabbard such that it cannot be withdrawn. Other knives of any kind are allowed within the on-field period-only campsites, but these must be stowed with other camping gear during gameplay. Players are not allowed to bring onto the field any explosive or other pyrotechnic devices, real firearms, or other non-Airsoft related items. Grenades and/or smoke bombs must be individually approved by the Event Organizer before use in the game.

10. NO ALCOHOL OR ILLEGAL DRUGS ARE ALLOWED ANYWHERE ON SITE. No smoking on the playing field or target range. Smoking is allowed in the staging and parking areas.

11. NO VERBAL ABUSE OR PHYSICAL CONTACT. While players are allowed to speak in character as part of their impression; heated sincere profanity directed at another player, or any other slurs against anyone’s character, race, color, national origin, family members, teams or equipment will not be tolerated. A player may not touch another player or their equipment at any time without their express permission.

12. REFEREES’ DECISIONS ARE FINAL. If referees are used, any decision a referee makes is final and will not be discussed on the playing field. The referee will discuss any calls in a calm manner off-field after the game or scenario is over. Players who are found by a referee to have violated any of the rules listed here will be asked by the Event Organizer to leave the game.

13. AGE REQUIREMENT. All players must be thirteen years old or older to participate. Players under eighteen years old are required to have a Parental Waiver signed and dated by their parent or legal guardian. NO EXCEPTIONS.

14. ELIMINATION. A player is eliminated from play if a BB strikes any part of his/her body, from the top of the head to the tips of the fingers to the bottoms of the feet, including any of equipment or gear worn. When a player is eliminated he will call out loudly “I’M OUT” or “I’M HIT”. He will immediately remove his hat or helmet, remove his gun’s magazine, place the barrel blocking device on the gun and proceed to his or her reinsertion point as quickly as possible. Eliminated players must exit to their team’s reinsertion area or the staging area. No players are allowed to shoot at eliminated players.
Eliminated players are considered dead and MUST NOT talk or communicate in any way with their teammates until they have returned to the reinsertion area. Any player with hat off or a barrel blocking device on their gun is considered to be eliminated. Eliminated players are not allowed to give any equipment or supplies to any other player, but may quietly leave equipment lying where they were eliminated. Hits to a player’s gun do not eliminate a player; However, they do eliminate that weapon. The gun is unusable until it has been returned to a reinsertion area. An eliminated player must immediately drop any game props he or she is carrying.
Airsoft is a game of HONOR and Sportsmanship. ALL players strive to exemplify fair play and call their hits, regardless of circumstance. In situations where a player isn’t sure, they should give their opponent the benefit of the doubt and simply call themselves out. You will not have to wait long to get back into the game if you are eliminated, so please call your hits! Cheating will not be tolerated in any form by any player.

15. REINSERTION & MEDICS. Rules for reinsertion and healing are scenario-specific, and will be explained by the Event Organizer prior to the start of the game.

16. HEAVY WEAPONS. Antitank weapons or mortars must be personally approved by the Event Organizer before they can be used on the field. Only players authorized by the Event Organizer may fire heavy weapons. The Event Organizer may ban the use of heavy weapons for specific scenarios at his discretion.

17. VEHICLES & ARMOR. Only preapproved period motorized vehicles are allowed on the field during gameplay. Each vehicle must be equipped with a removable white flag. Only designated drivers authorized by the Event Organizer will be allowed to operate motorized vehicles in play. Vehicles are confined to roadways. A vehicle may be approached when parked, but when it is moving all players must stay at least 10 feet away from it. A vehicle’s designated driver may eliminate any player that comes within 10 feet of his or her moving vehicle. Drivers and other occupants of soft-skinned motor vehicles may be eliminated with small arms fire in the ordinary manner. If the designated driver of a vehicle is eliminated, that vehicle must cease movement where it is and display a WHITE FLAG to indicate that it is disabled. A disabled vehicle remains inoperative for a 15-minute elimination period. Parked and/or disabled vehicles may be captured. A vehicle is considered under the control of whichever team’s active player sits in the front passenger seat. The designated driver of an armored vehicle is considered to be invulnerable to small arms fire while the driver’s hatch is closed. An armored vehicle requires a hit from a heavy weapon round in order to be disabled. IT IS EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN to climb onto or jump off of a moving armored vehicle, to charge an armored vehicle and thrust a weapon into an eye slit or gun port, or to hurl a grenade or any other piece of equipment into an armored vehicle - while period, all of these activities are dangerous for both vehicle driver and player, and will not be tolerated. Always remember that armored vehicles have severely limited visibility, are difficult to maneuver, and are much Much MUCH heavier than the average player. Occupants and/or crew of an armored vehicle may be eliminated by small arms fire IF the occupant is exposed on the outside of the vehicle, sticking up out of the turret, or can be targeted through an OPEN hatch. DO NOT FIRE INTO THE VISION SLITS OR GUN PORTS OF A MOVING ARMORED VEHICLE!

Directions to the Field from EC:

Address: Buddenhagen Farm
N2955 Sidney Ave.
Neillsville, WI 54456

Take I-94E to the Osseo exit, or Clairemont Ave east to Hwy 12E an onto where 12 intersects with Hwy 10 near Fairchild. Either way, turn east on Hwy 10 and drive towards Neillsville. From Fairchild to Sidney Ave is about 25 miles of county forestland. Once you climb the hill and pass High Ground on your right and Hwy. G on your left, keep your eyes peeled for an "WWII Event" sign on the righthand side of the road as you head back down the other side of High Ground hill. Turn right onto Sidney Ave - it's at the bottom of the valley, about halfway between the High Ground Memorial and the Neillsville city limits. Continue south on Sidney Ave until you see anther "WWII Event" sign on your right by a driveway set in a stand of pines. Turn right, drive to the parking area on your left, park and get out. Commence having fun.

Ausgezeichnet! More fodder for the glorious Frontoviks of the Red Army. I have a dozen really sharp-looking Volkssturm armbands I made, the cool black ones with the 2 white eagles and red border bands, plus three or four of the gold-and-black single eagle style. Also have a bunch of quick-and-dirty Organization Todt-style garrison caps (Volkssturm were often issued them) for anyone needing an appropriate lid. They are converted from modern Bundeswehr with iron-on tricolor bullseyes and Todt cap eagles I made, but they'll do for starters.

alex, we ask that weapons be as period as possible, but we also understand that not everyone has a WWII-era airsoft gun. What we plan to do is require that really obviously non-period guns (like yours) be camouflaged with burlap-strip wrapping. Burlap-wrapping was an extremely common practice used by all sides during the war, especially by snipers.

However, there's a better solution for you. You're doing Volkssturm, right? They were issued all kinds of older guns. I think I have enough scrap lying around the shop to whip together a quick-and-dirty MG13 front end we could clamp on to your gun. You could play a machine gunner. Let me see what I can do....

Nice to here from you. I planned on going to the Nov 4th game at APOC. I ordered an Chicom RPK so I could play a heavy machine gunner on the Afghani side. I do have the USMC Korean WW11 knock off jungle uniform for WW11.
Seeing the saws can carry a box of love under it so should the RPK's. It comes with an electric drum and an extra hicap. I am drifting away from the paintball and gravitating towards the milsim. Seeing you do WW11 I should make a g43 shroud for it. If WW1 event comes up I could make a French Chauchat cover for it. I think its spelled that way. Besides that, No tank, Cannon yes, Sold the other antitank cannon to The Edge paintball field. Now they want motars. Does anybody make a Tokarov pistol for airsoft?
Its a little bit of a drive to get up to the field. I was going to try the closer one first. Besides, my RPK is in the back of a truck on its way here yet. I don't think I will have it before Friday.

Talk later, good to here from you

Responding to alex sent a wild hair up my box mag. Here's what I ended up doing all day Sunday:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

It's an almost embarrassingly quick-and-dirty, kinda-sorta-maybe MP13 converted from one of Armsdealer's Chinese M733-Fs. Hey, for a WWII event, it sure beats what it looked like before. From a distance, it has the silhouette, and it sounds great when it's fired. The MP13 was used as a second-line light machinegun by both the Germans and the Russians during WWII, often supplied to Volkssturm, police, and partisan units. They were converted from old WWI Dreyse antiaircraft guns, and were the direct ancestors of the MG34.

Nice Job as always. I marvel at the way you can Hollywood up something to play the role it needs to do. The coroplast looks familiar? Depending on how the Nov 4th game goes will determine how deep I am going to dive into this. I can get a centraly located WI field to run an event next year. Its in the works and having it a reenactor event is cool. I will need to talk to you on that.

I was wondering if I could somehow pass off my AK47B (http://www.airsoftbattlezone.com/catalog/item/4051919/4037957.htm without the foregrip and with a painted tip of course) as a "STG 44" while still being a Volk, since I highly doubt I'll be able to get a full uniform of any sort. Perhaps having "taken" one off of a dead comrade.

That's kind of where I'm starting to wonder, can I just wear something like this?

http://kelticklankirk.com/volkssturm_militiamen_German_National_Militia_16_to_60.jpg

I don't know if this particular picture is historically inaccurate, but I have a kind of "civilian" suit like the ones pictured here, and I thought I could just wear that (without the tie and the hat), although I'm not sure what to do for pants.

Sure, an AK would work as an MP44 stand-in for a Volkssturm. Your pic is from a Volkssturm training session - excellent examples of '40s European civilian dress, BTW. If possible, try for a grey or black wool pants, jacket or overcoat - after that, dark green or brown. NO BDUs! A wide brown or black leather belt would be a nice touch as well. I have enough German uniform caps and armbands for 15 Volkssturm, plus five German cotton uniform jackets that will fit Men's size 36 or smaller (I'm a 38 and they are a bit tight on me.) If we have more than 15 civilians, the rest can play Russian partisans.

It appears I will be attending this event over the Zombie Event because Jason & Judy are going and they are my ride. I will find some fabric to cover up my gun.

If anyone has some burlap strapping I can borrow it would be most appreciated. I am sorry if I seem to be a leech but I am new to this and I don't have much in the way of resources.

Alex,

No problem just do not try and take Biscuits position of asking to borrow the most expensive stuff you can find at an airsoft game. I have some camo wrap you can use and I believe gryphon will have some extra at the game as well. Just a reminder that this game actually starts today with free overnite camping. OH yea one final note to players:

Thanks Grypon for helping the historically dumb fit in and putting on a great game. The uniforms and armbands you made for this game were fantastic. Nice to meet all the WW11 reenactors, great game guys. Not sure who was taking the pics at this game but if they get posted somewhere online please pass along the URL. Troy great field thanks for having us and when is the first non WW11 airsoft game gonna be. When I was guarding the village I noticed this has modern day western written all over it.
Also if you guys have any good links to Wisconsin based sellers of WW11 gear please pass them on so I will not have to be a polish resistance fighter at the next game hehe :)

Fun game Sat. Sorry I couldn't participate more. It was a Sitzkrieg for me but, I was on a toplevel mission from Judy, hereafter referred to as: god-2.
Had a blast anyhow. Met new people and made new friends. Was able to catch a modern air show while WW-2 was in progress. The F-16s were aw sum!
Thanks Todd and Troy. You guys are great!
(Addendum.) The arm band is a new addition to my WW-2 display. Looks good with my German bayonet, pins and other memorabilia. Thanks Todd.

Thank you guys for coming out and giving WWII-style airsoft a try. This was just a tiny taste. Hope you all enjoyed it, and maybe even were bitten by the "reenactor bug." Doing up a correct impression is half the fun for us history geeks. There are event pics at:

and

Armsdealer, if you would consider coming over from the Dark Side to the Red Side, I'd be happy to make you a Russian sergeant's uniform (I made about half the Russian uniforms you saw at the skirmish.) If anyone else ON THIS FORUM is interested, I'll make you a cotton M43 gymnastiorka and pilotka set(tunic & sidecap) for $75. This price includes a green hammer & sickle cap star AND an infantry private's shoulderboards. This is a GREAT price for authentically-styled WWII Russian gear - look at www.ostfront.com or www.tridentmilitary.com to see what I mean. I'm working on making a pattern for sharovari (baggie jodhpur-style Russian uniform pants) and telogreika (padded winter "snowsuit" jackets.)

If you want continue to do German Volkssturm or Heer, I suggest that you buy an East German or Swiss wool dress uniform from www.sportsmansguide.com (Look in "Military HQ", the "Coats & Parkas.") Contact me once you have it, and I can help you trick it out with correct insignia and/or armband. Also, I have a mold to make German M1918 helmets (a common second-line helmet,) ABZ forum price is $15 for an unfinished fiberglass shell, or $45 for finished painted helmet with liner and chinstrap (another fabulous deal - restored originals go for $400 or more apiece, and repros usually start at around $100, if you can find them.) I'll sell the Todt caps you wore at the event for $5 apiece, or a cap and one of those German cotton jackets with sewn-on collar tabs and Volkssturm armband for $25 a set. For another $10, I'll substitute a pair of dark green Heer private's shouldertabs for the Volkssturm armband.

www.sportsmansguide.com has East German pull-on combat boots for $15 a pair - that's a good deal if you wear size 9 or smaller. These would work for Russian or German. Look in "Military HQ" under "Footgear."

If you want to do a serious 1940s armed civilian partisan or Resistance fighter impression, contact me and I can help you get it right. This is the easiest and least expensive to do, but there are a couple of pitfalls to look out for.

I also have full-sized paper patterns for the Mosin-Nagant carbine made from a $20 pump shotgun I'll supply free to anyone who wants to make one like mine. I played all day with it. The Mosin-Nagant was the most common gun on the Eastern Front and would be correct for Red Army, German Volkssturm, or partisans.

If we can get enough properly-armed and outfitted players for the spring game we could do a truly cool Ostfront scenario (I mean give-you-goosebumps cool) with grenades, sabotage rules, guerrilla strikes against the occupying Germans, advancing Red Army troops, and civilian NPCs living in the village.

Shizzletwits, are you asking what I would charge to build you a Mosin-Nagant like mine if you supplied the base gun? Or did you want a price for a parts kit so you could do the conversion and finishing yourself?

Gryphon's After Action Report:

Friday dawned damp and overcast. Troy was out early doing final field prep, setting up registration and chrono tables, arranging "Boris' WWII Reenactor Surplus Discount Emporium," putting up his outstanding directional signs, walking the field and double-checking to make sure that the buildings and trails were free of debris, and trying to get Natasha the BA-64 Russian armored scout car started. She was cranky and wouldn't catch, despite her having run perfectly at every other event we took her to this season. Todd - aka Gryphon - showed up late (as usual) and he and Troy hung the "Achtung Minen" field boundary markers. From there out, it was meet-and-greet in the camping area as the hardy overnight campers arrived. The Volkssturm volunteers from Gopmat (a village in the south of Germany, apparently,) the lone GI from the 45th Infantry, and 9th SS settled in at the camping area, while the 2nd Rangers pitched a period camp at the Allied rally point on the east end of the field and dug themselves the finest camouflaged foxhole the field has ever seen. Very nice position - it would come in handy Saturday. Todd left to outfit his squad of Russian conscripts, and Troy got a bonfire going. What happened around that fateful fire on that cold Friday night is anyone's guess, but we Russians noticed that our American Ranger allies had an awfully difficult time making Reveille the next morning....

Saturday dawned cool and cloudy. Todd showed up around 7:30am with a carload of bleary-eyed Russian girls (as usual) who brightened considerably once they were kindly allowed to fill their bellies with fine German coffee and cake and even freshly fried-up hash and eggs courtesy of the Gopmat Volkssturm and the 9th SS. Ausgezeichnet! Luckily, our political officer hadn't arrived yet, or they might have been shot as collaborators. Da, Russian girl, she go always for man with food....

Natasha the BA-64, our other Russian girl, proved not so easy to rouse. Even after being towed, and gassed, and having her plugs cleaned and regapped, she just would not start. Todd pulled the Panzerfausts from the game since there would be no armor on the field. Fortunately, Dave Brooks of ISG arrived with his vintage war-era Willys Jeeps, so the Americans at least had wheels for the day.

Waxmandave turned up in a spotless officer's uniform to lead the Panzergrenadiers with his brand-new AGM MP40. Although he is an experienced reenactor and has beautiful kit, this was his first ever airsoft event, so out of kindness we won't mention the confusion over the safety rule requiring "barrel condoms."

Everybody chrono-ed in under the limit, which was a huge relief. We all milled around, taking unit pics, hollering into the woods to try and wake up the Rangers, and admiring each others' guns and gear. The safety briefing was at 9:30am, only an hour late, which is something of a record for Todd. Just as the safety briefing finished, three carloads of local ABZ Volkssturm led by Jason of Airsoft Battle Zone arrived. The Germans and Allies were allowed to take the field and prepare for battle while Todd sorted out the new recruits. Most of these were sent into the first skirmish "Defense of Berlin" as ABZ Volkssturm, but a few were conscripted into the Red Army. The fighting around the village was intense; the first Russian attack was repulsed handily, but the second Red assault pressed home and drove the Germans out. The German counterassault had ten Germans vs. two Russian women scouts with SMGs, the only Russians left alive to defend the village when the scenario ended at 12:30pm.

Lunchbreak until 1:30pm, then the next scenario "Poland 1939." Jason's civilians played Polish villagers trying to defend their hamlet from both the Germans advancing from the south and the Russians moving in from the east. The Russians sent their political officer forward in a Lend-Lease Jeep, in hopes of convincing the Poles to join the glorious Bolshevik struggle against Fascist oppression, but the stubborn Poles refused to see reason. Not wanting to shed too much Polish blood unnecessarily, the Russians sent half their troops in a circling movement around to the north and west of the village. The mission of this second Russian squad was to cut off Polish reinforcements and hit the German assault in its unprotected left flank, which would then allow the first Russian squad to take this poor misbegotten Polish village into protective custody. This scheme worked well for the Russians, until the German MG42 gunner spotted the Russian point man and pinned the Russians down near the Polish reinsertion area. As house-to-house fighting raged between the first Russian squad and the Germans in the village, the two remaining remnants of the second Russian squad conscripted the lone remaining Pole into the Red Army and pushed into the village from the west. Little did they know that there was but one person left alive in the entire village, a single youthful Panzergrenadier faithfully standing guard. Naturally, Gryphon the Russian point man walked right into his ambush and was shot at close range, leaving it to the Pole to have the satisfaction of finishing off the German at point-blank range.

The ABZ Volkssturm rejoined their Wehrmacht brethren for the third scenario at 3:30pm, "Ukraine 1942," where 18 Germans assaulted 12 Russians and allies dug in on the east end of the field. By this time, the sun was out and the field had warmed to the point where some were experiencing goggle-fogging, but despite this the action was fast and furious. There was a concentrated German blitz through the heavy brush mid-field. At one point, a Deutcher soldat leapt into a foxhole on top of three Russians he had just machinegunned to death, so he could continue the fight to take the next foxhole up the hill. The American Rangers put up a particularly stiff defense from their camouflaged hilltop bunker, but even they were eventually overwhelmed by the force of German numbers. The game was called at 4:15pm, before a Russian counterassault could be organized.

Afterwards, we packed up gear and headed home, tired but happy.

Thank you all for making the drive to come play, and for providing the ambience and quality of play to make this an outstanding event. I know that, for many of you, this was either your first airsoft event or your first WWII reenactment-style event, and I thank each and every one of you for your welcoming and tolerant attitudes. This was a fantastically friendly first event for our field, and we REALLY want to preserve that sense of comaraderie. Special thanks to the ersatz brothers and everyone else who made donations to the field improvement fund to help Troy out; to the 2nd Rangers for the new foxholes; to Dave Brooks for the Jeep; and Jason and Hugh in the Airsoft Battle Zone Mobile Supply Unit for providing genral airsoft goodies, free chips, rental guns and goggles.

The official headcount was 34, not 31 (Todd and those Russian girls, they never remember to sign in.) Except for the inscrutable Natasha, everyone's equipment appeared to work throughout the day. I LOVE my $20 MOSIN-NAGANT for house-to-house village CQB! The photos, especially Cpl. Mills' period B&Ws taken with a period camera, are beautiful. Troy's field is so cool, and so are his signs. My farby Russian accent was improved by getting to listen to a real Russian, whom the 9th SS is trying to recruit into their ranks. Nobody got hurt, or lost, or enduringly pissed off. Everyone tried their best to play fair and by the rules, and except for a couple of heat-of-the-moment infringements on the "Bang" rule, all went very well indeed. If fact, those two incidents sorta underscored why we use the Bang rule on this field, and I know we all will remember the example of Troy's nose and Jason's extra bellybutton when we play our two-day Belorussia scenario event this spring.

At the spring scenario, we hope to have civilian NPCs living in the village, a unit of Belorussian partisans, grenade rules, medic rules, and hopefully armor. More on this to come....

Gryphon,

Sign me up for the spring game. I am seriously thinking of taking you up on the uniform offer except, well... have you ever seen how sexy a thompson is. If the Russians can come up with a airsoft gun that is as sexy as the airsoft tommy gun then ?????????? ?? ???? ???!. Thanks for guiding me to the patton unleashed pictures and I agree the black and white pics do really add a nice effect. Cpl mills was in today and shared the whole stack of pics with us. We reminisced about the highlights of the game, how cool that bunker was and how bad that thompson I upgraded for him hurts. (note to self limit upgrades on op4 guns) Looking forward to the spring game.

Armsdealer, hang on, my airsoft PPSh41 (Russian version of the Tommy gun)is on the way! Actually, you could legitimately use a Thompson as a Russian, if it's the 20s/30s-style one with the pistol-style foregrip and the finned barrel. Roosevelt shipped the Russians a whole fleet of Lend-Lease American M3 tanks before we entered the war, and each of those tanks came equipped with a rackful of Thompson SMGs as personal weapons for the crew. The frugal Russians stripped these out of the tanks and issued them to the grunts, where they were highly prized - especially by Russian special forces and paratroopers.

Shizzel, let me get back to you on this. I'm working on a 2nd generation design for the cocking bolt that would mechanically simplify the entire conversion, which would mean less $$$ for you. The cost isn't in the materials, it's in the labor, so anything I can do to make the work go faster decreases the cost of the finished rifle. Give me a couple of weeks....

That's the very one, nicknamed the Papasha. The Finns taught the Russians (the hard way) how SMGs should be used during the Winter War, so Uncle Joe had his people make their own version based on the Finnish Suomi. The PPSh41 was the Russian Frontovik's signature weapon, the backbone of the Red Army infantry. The Soviets produced millions of them - entire infantry units were armed with them and taught to swarm enemy positions with guns blazing full auto, while snipers armed with Mosin-Nagants supported the assault by picking off the German officers and machinegun crews. This tactic SERIOUSLY freaked out the Germans at Stalingrad and after. The PPSh41 had a higher rate of fire than the MP40, plus a larger ammo capacity with its drum mag. After the war, the Russians replaced the PPSh41 with the AK-47, but the basic Papasha design is so good and so reliable that the Iranians are still using it to this day.

My version will be fiberglass with a ver. 7 gearbox, hop-up, and two mag options - a high-cap drum mag, or a mid-cap stick. It will fieldstrip into upper and lower receiver sections like the AGM MP40, but the battery will store in the buttstock like the M14. I'm about three-quarters done with the prototype pattern set. Have no fear, I'll be blabbing all over the place once it's ready for production!

There is also a version of the MP40 that was equipped with a wooden stock as opposed to the pistol grip. Seeing as the MP40 uses a version 7 type mechbox, building the stock should not be overly difficult.

Texx, that's the MP41. It was a rare gun in the Reich, since, like the extremely cool MP28, it was only issued to police units inside Germany. For an alternative wood-stocked SMG for a WWII German impression, look at the Italian Beretta Modello 38 series - German soldiers especially LOVED this gun and swiped them from the Italians any time they had the chance. Even Americans liked the Beretta.

The AGM MP40 gearbox is (I think) a modified ver. 3, not a 7 (I could be wrong on this, you and Armsdealer know a lot more about the 'boxes than I do.) But I do know this - the M14 ver. 7 will fit in my PPSh41 housing, while an AGM MP40 will not - it's almost 3/8" too tall to fit.

I hope to have one or two up and running within the next couple of weeks. The Ersatz brothers are hosting an East Front event up north near Pickerel, WI, on Feb 8-10 - here are the details:
